First 1000 Days Initiative

Previous nutrition programs initiated by the Barangay Don Jose Nutrition Office headed by Barangay Nutrisyon Scholar, Concepcion “Connie” Manera.

Our previous news story on the First 1000 Days program of the National Nutrition Council has yet garnered no updates in the locality of Barangay Don Jose in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.

However, First 1000 Days programs are also being implemented worldwide to promote healthier children. More programs are being initiated to foster a stronger support for nutrition. In Geneva, a collaborative project brought to life the “First 1000 Days Promise.” The initiative was to aid in the early childhood education and provision of facilities to support the First 1000 Days program. It provides parents a multi-faceted support from food, counseling services, and education.

Meanwhile, the government Zero Hunger task force is looking to sustain this program for years to come. While public and private institutions are contributing to aid in the initiative, the lead convener Kristine Go is still encouraging the public to support the program through monetary donations.

After the cooperation with Veterable Lady Veterinarians (VLV) in a successful spay and neuter activity called ‘Spaying it Forward’ on October 10, 2021 that benefited 16 cats and two dogs, Compassion for Animals Through Service of the University of the Philippines (CATS of UPLB) continues to receive funds for the campus animals, particularly from a fundraising activity by Barangay Safe Space.

CATS of UPLB had received approximately Php 4,000.00 worth of funds from Barangay Safe Space, a charity organization for stray animals established on November 25, 2021 by University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) second year students. More than half of the funds were from generous donors and the remaining were from ‘Sticker Paw for a Cause,’ a digital sticker funding raising activity in collaboration with Bago Creatives PH that was open for commission from December 12, 2021 to December 30, 2021.

Arielle Arizala, the founder of Barangay Safe Space, explained that their organization’s advocacy was to share, educate, and raise awareness towards animal welfare. They chose to raise funds for CATS of UPLB as their chosen beneficiary. Arizala added that animals are important in our lives and thus, humans should not abandon them.

“We believe that there should be equality amongst pets, where every animal get the love and care that they deserve, no matter the breed,” Arizala said.

Unfortunately, Barangay Safe Space won’t be continuing to offer their services since the fund-raising activity was for a project for their Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) subject although Arizala had said that if they were given the opportunity to collaborate with CATS of UPLB again, they will.

The said two key activities were done to meet CATS of UPLB’s advocacies, which are the following: to control the stray animals’ population inside the university campus, to feed and monitor the animals, to vaccinate the animals, and to give the vulnerable and dependent animals a home.

Chiara Manuel, a University of the Philippines alumni who is also a freelancer of a knitting business and a co-founder of the organization made it clear that they are not a rescue group, but rather an organization that finds and applies solutions to the root causes of stray animal overpopulation inside the campus.

“Abandoning animals in the streets only transfers the responsibility to someone else. It does not solve the problem,” Manuel said.

The organization brings batches of cats and/or dogs to either The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) or Philippine Pet Birth Control Center (PPBCC), where spaying and neutering were the cheapest.

According to The Philippine Animal Welfare Society, spay and neuter does not only lessen the stray animal population, but it also has a few health benefits for the animal that can make them live longer. It can reduce the chances of breast cancer, uterine infections, pyometra, and testicular cancer. It also affects a pet’s behaviour; their tendency to leave their homes in search of a mate will stop, and their temperament will increase into a calmer state. The cat or dog must be at least 6 months old to be fit for surgery and they must not eat or drink 12 hours before getting fixed. Although a blood test for blood count and liver function is required for pets over four years of age to ensure their well-being.

If interested to foster, adopt, or donate for the campus stray animals, you may check CATS of UPLB’s official Facebook page.

LET’S VAX AS ONE!

Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes Tolentino

Hair Salons in Quezon City reopens for limited face-to-face services

by: Ynigo Panghulan

QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES – More than one year since the Philippines was put to its first of many lockdowns, Salons in Quezon City is officially back for limited face-to-face services for their customers.

The Department of Trade and Industry has allowed haircut establishments to operate since last June 7 at 30-percent capacity in areas under general community quarantine.

Janette Carballo, who has been working as a hairdresser and manicurist for 26 years at Jem’s Salon and Beaucare Spa in Quezon City said that the pandemic has brought changes in the hairstyling industry and these limited contact services have helped them gain back what they have lost since 2020  on a Google Meet interview last October 28, 2021.

With the new normal, gone is the scene of crowded barbershops and salons with customers chit-chatting with one another. Carballo who has been working for two decades in the salon industry said that customers will have to book their appointment in their salon and walk-ins are not allowed. Also, bringing food inside the salon is strictly prohibited and social distancing should always be observed.

“Appointments lang at bawal ang walk-in, hindi pwedeng magdala ng pagkain, palaging isuot ang facemask at palaging panatiliin ang social distancing,” she said.

Moreover, Carballo added that haircut services are already increased as they are also providing safety kits for the customers and the employees, which will be part of the service fee with the help of the Barangay Heads.

The Local Government Unit in Quezon City is also helping salon owners ensure that all health protocols and measures are being done at all times by doing round-to-round checks in every salon and nail spas across Quezon City.

As salons have reopened since June 2021, Carballo said that their employees will have to only work for 4 days than the usual 5 days and undergo rapid testing to still ensure the safety of everyone. The establishments are also conducting general cleaning daily to keep the premises clean.

Currently, Quezon City Salons with the help of LGU and City Barangay Heads are planning to make vaccination cards a requirement when booking for salon services.

The sound of chatters and the source of our gossip is back! Your haircuts will never be the same as any other! #SalonNgMasa #ManiCURE #SalonsNgayongPandemiya

Journalism for Ynigo was an escape from reality. When he writes feature articles, he feels like he was being drawn to a whole new dimension that even he cannot explain. It was a place for him to breathe, free from expectations, free from comparisons, and free from rumors that were circulating around his name. Following his heart, Ynigo saw his purpose to be and made an avenue for him to reach new heights. He won in the Division Level as a campus journalist. Journalism did not just let him achieve awards but also made him see what the world is and how big it can be, that his problems are not bigger than the marginalized people. This made him realize to venture different interests in his life like being active on societal issues and using the platforms and privileges he has to be a voice for the youth and the LGBTQ++ Community. This passion made him more educated and open to things that are not on his scope and realized what the world truly needs at this time, a student leader who can rely on and someone who is brave enough to conquer every challenge that comes in their way and will always stand for the people regardless of anything.

This story was published on wordpress.com on January 18, 2022, at 9:26 PM.

STUDENT HEROES– STUDENTS HAVE TAKEN PART-TIME JOBS, MAINTAINS GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING

STUDENT HEROES—A crowdsourcing on how working students balance their time for school matters and job responsibilities was conducted to the working-students as crews in a fastfood chain in Mexico, Pampanga.

The crowdsourcing started 28th of October and lasted for almost a month to gather more information from working-students on their insights and experiences on how to balance a work and school life. Most of the responses gathered from these working-students have said that time-management is the key balance between their responsibilities.

Working students are striving in order to earn both financial and experience. The dean of the school they attend gives considerations for working students, as supported by Ryan Tiglao one of the interviewee, a working student for almost 4 years in a fast food chain in Mexico, Pampanga, also a part of dean’s list in Don Honorio Ventura State University.

According to Ryan Tiglao, sacrifice is one thing that one cannot avoid if you are a working-student. There are a lot of other scenarios where a working-student will have to decide if one must sacrifice something for the other. Despite these struggles, there are actually a lot of benefits in being a working student. These major benefits are also the motivations of the student heroes, the skills and experience they gain which can be essential for their future jobs really equips them into getting familiar with the real-life scenario and helps in easily adapting to the actual environment they will come across in the near future.

The working students who responded in the crowdsourcing, revealed that having a job while studying really helps in aiding their financial necessities. They helped themselves to earn and buy for themselves, as well as helping their parents to lessen the burden when it comes to financial matters.

These various experiences from working students are living proof of how they deserve to be called student heroes. Balancing their responsibilities is no easy task, but because of their personal dreams and aspirations, they continue to struggle in order to have the capability to sustain themselves and to help their families.

The DevCom Experience: 9 Years After

The College of Development Communication has produced many outstanding alumni. Given this, I have been given the honor to interview one of the many outstanding alumni of the College of Development Communication, Chelsea Alejandro. Chelsea obtained her BS Development Communication degree from the University of the Philippines Los Banos last 2013. Chelsea’s background as a former development communicator-in-training and a former member of the UP Alliance of Development Communication Students has been an essential factor in the success of her professional life so far.

For instance, learning about empathizing and getting to know one’s audience aided her in creating accessible learning materials for her students in her first job as an instructional designer in an eLearning start-up. In her current job as a university instructor teaching communication and journalism, her Development Communication background comes into play by enabling her to set concrete objectives that clearly define the scope of her lessons.

Through taking up Development Communication, she learned that one can make news out of anything, which taught her to talk to more people than she was used to. Importantly, the course also taught her how to write clearly and effectively, a skill that she uses to excel in her profession. All in all, taking up Development Communication helped Chelsea grow out of her comfort zone, imparting invaluable skills that can aid her in all aspects of life.

Throughout my freshman year, I admittedly have felt lost regarding what to pursue after college. I felt unequipped and even inadequate, not because of the curriculum, but because of my self-doubt. However, my interview with Ms. Alejandro made me realize the fact that a lot of lessons are learned along the way both in DevCom and in life. This could be in the form of a group project which leaves a greater mark on you than you expected it to or even a motto that etches itself into your heart as you go through your student life and career.

Regardless of what I wish to pursue in the future, I wish to be as excellent and as compassionate as Ms. Chelsea Alejandro. I, one day, hope to be the wonderful alumni that she has become in order to serve others and to make both my college and my peers proud.
