As a media writer and a development communication practitioner in the making, you have to identify what made you do your job and for who do you render your service. Being service-oriented is the most important quality you should have when writing information. Serve the people, be their vanguard of truth in a world full of disinformation and revisionism. In that way, your burning passion will serve as the foundation of your qualities as a media writer.

On the other hand, writing clearly and effectively is a skill that should be priorities by any media writer. If you can deliver your message clearly to your receiver and load them with accurate information, this indicates that you are an effective writer. Go back to the question “Para kanino?” we have to adjust our writing style to be understood by the general public. An effective communicator is an accomplished one.

Who is he?

The main character of his own story.

The stellar rule-breaker.

The eagle of the south.

Jan Andrei Abiel F. Apelo, also known as “Andrei/Andy,” is a 19-year-old BS Development Communication student at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños. He’s from Mati City, Davao Oriental, a booming city for tourism and known for its rich culture.

Andrei is part of various youth organizations in his City. He has been showing the spirit of volunteerism since 9th grade and exposed himself to the community. Youth empowerment and volunteerism have been his interests ever since up until today. He is also interested in Rap Music. Earlier last year, he started making his crafts in rap and slowly investing more time creating music. Now he’s also entering the field of journalism and applied as a writer trainee for Davao Oriental Tribune News.

As much as Andy was involved in socio-civic activities in his hometown, he’s not always the good son he seemed to be. Just like any teenager, he experienced the craziest thing he could; passing out of alcohol intoxication, skipping classes, and sneaking out of his room late at night. Even though Andy had his not-so-proudest moments, he still managed to pull it all back and recalibrate himself in favor of his dreams. He aspires to be a public servant one day in hopes of changing the system within.

The Coffin

It was the 30th of August when I woke up from a deep sleep. I haven’t had enough time to immerse myself in the bed since my grandmother passed away two days ago. It seems like we’re in the infinite space of a gloomy hue as we mourn for the death of our beloved.

My phone was vibrating nonstop; I checked it out of annoyance–It was the unending message notification I kept receiving from my former roommate back in senior high school. I yawned as I unlocked my phone and rubbed my eyes off due to the blinding lights coming from the screen.

“Check the website of UPLB, nag release na sila ng results sa appeal!!” He said. Oh, I filed an appeal for reconsideration for BS Development Communication at the University of the Philippines – Los Banos Campus. A lot of things happened within the past few weeks that I already forgot about my “recon” application. My mood automatically shifted from being dull to anxious real quick as I opened the website.

Congratulations! You are offered admission to the BS Development Communication program this First Semester 2021-2021

My heartbeat felt like a firework, and I hurriedly stormed into my mom’s room like a baking soda’s chemical reaction to vinegar. They were so happy for me, and I felt the pride and honor to be the first Iskolar ng Bayan in the family.

I got into my dream school with my dream course, the University of the Philippines Development Communication. Serve the country for the people. My patriotic self can’t help but feel the excitement as I embark on a new journey. This course will be essential to my endeavors in public service.

Many have asked what Development Communication is and why I chose this course. Simply because the sole purpose of Devcom is in line with my passion–helping the general public. We utilize any medium of communication to uplift one’s community and amplify their voices. It is also about building a relationship with others as a foundation of their development.

Aside from helping the poor and giving out services, our degree aims to empower you in order to empower other people. We are programmed to be the pillars of truth, justice, and loyalty for our countrymen. In this way, we could battle poverty, oppose injustices, and prejudice incompetence to have a better life. People long for good governance, complete access to information on technology, politics, human rights, and the enjoyment of excellent public service. Right, excellent public service.

The moment I realized that I got into UP DevCom, I thought about my grandmother in the coffin. She could’ve lived if hospitals were equipped with sufficient medical supplies. She could’ve lived if the government had appropriately handled the pandemic. She could’ve lived if only there were people that would intensify our calls for better healthcare.

As development communicators in training, I promise to leverage my knowledge and make sure people won’t suffer from the rotten system. Alleviate their tribulation and volume up their clamour just like what my late grandmother did. Our service as a watchdog and as a vanguard of society is crucial to improving our system. Her coffin reminds me of my purpose. I will not disappoint you, Mama Ting.
